Agro Care

With an area of 261 hectares, Agro Care has become one of the largest tomato producers in Europe. We grow tomatoes in various varieties to meet the requirements of the large retail organisations. Twelve months a year we deliver a uniform quality, by leaving nothing to chance during growth. In the periods of low light in the Netherlands, production is maintained thanks to supplemental lighting. We create additional capacity with our African production locations in Morocco and Tunisia. Producing with an eye for people and nature is paramount at Agro Care.

La joie de Hicha

It’s a continuity project of Desert Joy; our ambition is to continue to grow our company at a nearby location with an additional 120 hectares in the coming years. This ambition goes further than just building a new greenhouse. With this greenhouse we want to set an example for sustainable greenhouse horticulture in areas with a desert climate with water scarcity. This means the following for us: Fair-trade: Just like at the Desert Joy location, we want to grow fully Fair-trade and provide very good work conditions.

Create 3,500 jobs (70-80% women), training and housing for about 2,000 people.

Sea water: Water is scarce in Tunisia. In order not to use the precious water present, we want to use a desalination installation to purify seawater for use in the greenhouses. We want a larger capacity than is strictly necessary for the greenhouses, so that we have enough to provide sufficient water for the intended construction of a forest and homes. · Natural energy sources, wind- and solar energy: Tunisia suffers from a shortage of electricity. In order not to burden the network any further, we want to be completely self-sufficient. The surplus is added to the STEG network.

Planting a forest: The surrounding land of the greenhouses is currently low-grade soil on which almost nothing grows. Government initiatives in the region show that it is possible to plant a forest with the help of irrigation in the early years of trees and plants. It is our ambition to plant a forest in stages with which we want to create a good living climate for residents in the region, to combat desertification and to compensate for the CO2 emissions that we are not (yet) able to reduce.

Hydrogen gas: We need hot water to heat the greenhouses during the period when it is still too cold in the greenhouses at night. We now use gas to heat the water. It is our ambition to use hydrogen gas for this in the future. It is not yet possible to completely stop using natural gas because we also use it to keep the CO2 concentration in the greenhouses on track.
